Non- insertional injuries are the most common type of Achilles injury. The tendon itself or the sleeve that covers it can be injured. Sometimes the inside of the tendon is more painful, sometimes the outside. Where the injury lies gives a clue as to where the strain is running into the tendon. If you have recently got new shoes and then shortly developed Achilles pain after, especially if it is right on the posterior edge of the tendon, then check out your shoes. The Grasstree diggings were about fifteen miles down the coast from Mackay, readily accessible only by sea, there being no all-weather dray track to the field despite it being right by the coast. Or perhaps because it was on the coast? Perhaps it was a bit superfluous to expend labour on building a road? Many causes of backache, but the largest number result from strain, fatigue and lack of balance. Strain may result from unnatural posture while sitting, standing and walking, or trom a one-sided occupation. Those who carry weight on one side, such as postmen, or children with their school books usually over one shoulder may have considerable backache-and may develop definite spinal curvature. Massage your heel, applying pressure in the areas that hurts the most for about five minutes. Then, hold your feet by the ankle and shake your foot. First, try a gentle stretch for the bottom of your foot. Sit with your foot out in front of you and wrap an exercise band or a towel around the ball of your foot. Gently pull the ends of the towel or band towards you and hold the stretch for around 30 seconds. Another to try starts with sitting on a chair. Put the affected foot under the chair as far as you can and try and press your heel into the floor. You should feel a stretch along the bottom of your foot. Again, hold for 30 seconds. Lastly, try a stair stretch.
So the most common cause of your heel pain is plantar fasciitis. Eliminate that as a cause first. If it is plantar fasciitis, there is a lot you can do to heal or cure heel pain with treatments at home and get pain relief. You can use arch supports or orthotics if all or some of your shoes cause it. If you’re having severe or chronic heel pain then make sure to see a podiatrist for the right diagnosis and treatment. You may need to buy custom orthotics if you can’t heal or cure your heel pain any other way.
For my shoes the fit was too tight, so I bought Dr. Scholls full length inserts (which I didn’t like for running). I also bought on Amazon the ProStretch to stretch my calf muscles to prevent the heel pain from flaring up. I gave this only 4 stars because I did not compare it with less expensive alternatives, and also because unless you do stretching exercises (for which you don’t need any equipment, though for me the ProStretch makes it easier) the heel pain will recur, though perhaps not with the same severity.
